Alpha-less DXT3 textures

Post by Mike... » Mon Sep 06, 2010 2:41 pm

Over on the Alpha India Group (the AI posse) Forums there's an ongoing project aimed at searching for and fixing alpha-less DXT3 (.bmp (FS9)) textures in scenery addons. Apparently, a DXT3 texture is supposed to have an alpha channel. If it doesn't, the computer can spend some time on "calculating" one. Which results in on-screen stuttering.

Most of the older FlyTampa sceneries do not have alpha-less DXT3 textures, but some of the more recent do have several. KBOS for example and KBUF. At KBUF this results in a noticeable loading lag (the initial loading of the sim for example). Once the textures have been "fixed", the lag is gone.

If you want to test this out for yourself, the offending textures are:
Image

Image Tool is used to check out all textures, DXT3's with Alpha: None are noted, then DXTBmp is used to simply resave the file, this adds the missing alpha. If the original had mips, the option in DXTBmp to include them when saving should be checked. File size should remain pretty much the same, 1.33MB for example.

There's plenty of reading material on the AIG Forums, but for members only, non-registered visitors can't read it. So if you want to know more, you'd have to sign up. Or just ask here.

I wanted to bring this to your attention, so future FlyTampa sceneries can be like the older ones, free of alpha-less DXT3 textures. Icing on the cake.

Don't think i knew that. Sounds familiar however.
Those files(PSDs) do have alpha, its just my batch converter has a -noalpha parameter that shouldn't be there.

So how does one go about applying this fix if he is an average end user like me? I like the idea of no lag. :)

I do not know that!

How we can apply this fix?

Not only for the FT scenaries, but for other add-ons too!

I've converted the textures for you guys. I would have though the differences in load times would be negligible, but anyway...

Let me know if this fix does improve performance/reduce stutters & I'll add these files to patch later.

Its fs9 only. FSX isn't effected.

So we just add these to the texture folder in the KBOS and KBUF scenery?

The difference is very noticeable. I saw a marked improvement in loading, so much so that when switching views and panning it was vitually instantaneous. Before, there was a 'grey-out' period when loading the scenery, and stutters when switching views. I get this with seattle and midway as well....don't really notice it with ST. Maarten. Thanks for the mod!!!

Thanks George!

Felixthreeone, KSEA and TNCM don't have alpha-less DXT3's, so this issue doesn't apply to what you're experiencing.

Mr George,

I know that this is not the priority now, but...

You will make an equivalent patch for KBOS ?

I saw a difference here !

Thanks!

Yep, I'm working on a small BOS patch so I'll add this too.
