SWA Pilot...another question

Post by chumley50 » Thu Oct 27, 2005 2:05 pm

I just read your response as far as when to use flap settings when approaching KMDW...thanks alot for that..it really helps us "Pretend Pilots" to at least.. think...we're flying like the real Captions do....if you don't mind I'd like to pick your brain again...as far as approach...you said you are at 250 kts about 12 miles out...what would be the average safe speed you are at when you are on the ILS...let's say for 4R..about 7 or 8 miles out....meaning I watch the planes on the 4R approach from where I live and they seem to have some flaps down already and I'd like to know about what speed they are at at this point on the final approach...also is it safe to say ...gear down.. about 6 or 7 miles out and a speed of 140kts..give or take...is a good speed to nail the landing??....one more...as far as take-off...how soon do you turn the auto pilot on after take-off?? I'm curious because ..myself..as soon as I lift off and put the gear up ..I'm clicking in the auto pilot and GPS nav buttons....just curious to see how soon most Captions engage the auto pilot..which leads me to another question....on landing...how often do you let the auto pilot fly you to the runway before turning it off??Do you even use it in good, clear weather?...just curious again because I tend to let the auto pilot fly me to about 300 ft ...then I just coast down to the runway..probably not to realistic.....thank you very much and if I overstepped boundaries here in asking to many questions here..I apologize....my fantasy scenerio is..me on a flight to Las Vegas....the flight attendant comes up to me..knowing how many thousands of hours I have on MSFlight Simulator...she advises me both the Capt and Co-Pilot have taken ill and have collapsed...it's up to me to bring her in for a landing at McCarren....I say..no problem..as long as the auto pilot comes equipped with a "mouse"!!

Most approaches are planned to select the final flaps about the same time that you capture the glide slope if you are at the glideslope intercept altitude (usually 2000'-4000' AGL) there are different circumstances that may dictate otherwise. You should also plan on being a @170KTS by a 5 mile final, not really much slower or faster. The main point is that you should never have final flaps out unless you are descending (check out the fuel flow with flaps 40 and level flight). At over $2 a gallon for JetA, you would not be flying planes long as a career. As far as autopilot goes, it is usually a personal preference. Some hand fly to 18000' and some turn on the autopilot @ 2000', that goes for takeoff and landing.

Thanks for the info

Thanks so much for the info...very much appreciated from a fan of all pilots....hope you don't mind another question...during the climb to your assigned flight level....are you at 250kts all the way up?? or do you adjust throttles to go faster..if so..what speed?... when you clear 10000 ft?..and what is your fps set at during a typical climb...as for a typical cruising speed at altitude...what is your mach indicator set at or IAS....and for decent..what is the typical fps for a decent for...lets say....from 31000ft. to 12000 ft.?? I realize there are many factors involved with this....but I'm just looking for some typical settings during a flight so I can..at least ...think I'm flying like the real guys are....thanks again for the info and if these questions are a bother...let me know ....

SWAPilot:

What is the generally aircraft setup for departing MDW? Using the Kittyhawk or 50N B737s, I can never get off the ground without scraping the fences.

I would check your fuel load. It seems that most takeoff problems in FS are fuel load related, ie: too much on board.

If you have the PMDG 737 then you would use the FMS CLB speed that is indicated. Or you could just use @ 280-300kts without an FMS. On a descent it is not the same as RW flying. In RW flying you would have crossing restrictions to make, and then you would adjust your descent rate or speed based on making that restriction.
