Dirt effect on concrete
As the title suggests, I am seeing numerous instances where I am taxiing on concrete but see the dirt effect (dirt being kicked up by the tyres) when I should not. Seems that for some reason developers haven't set the scenery correctly for where dirt is and is not in some areas. Can this be looked into? One area I recall is in the apron outside the freight terminal beside the International.

It's intentional. I like a little dust being kicked up off the main line. On the helicopter ramp especially, its nice to see dust stirred up by the rotor wash.

I don't want to sound pedantic, but in reality there isn't/shouldn't be any dirt being kicked up on taxiways and apron areas. Why? Quarantine restrictions.george[flytampa] wrote:It's intentional. I noticed when work was being done on the International Terminal at YSSY a number of years ago that all construction vehicles leaving the worksite had to drive through a shallow bathing pool to wash their tyres. They were quite fastidious about it.
I asked one of the construction workers having lunch in the terminal why this was done. He explained that if they left mud tracks from the trucks all over the apron and taxiways the mud/dirt would get picked up by the tyres of aircraft as they taxied and it would then get transported to whichever country they were flying to and then deposited on the ground there when the landing gear doors re-opened for landing. By bathing the tyres, it is supposed to stop the possible spread of contaminants from our country to others.

I thought I'd add my 2 cents worth here.
It's not really a quarantine issue but an issue concerning "FOD".
This is a term for "Foreign Objects Displacement". A huge problem when the jetwash of one aircraft kicks foreign objects (ie dried mud, pebbles, rocks, etc) into an aircraft travelling-taxiing behind them.
FOD can also hit ground crew and cause considerable harm.
Therefore, the best airports in the world have a zero tolerance for any FOD. There are crews out there constantly checking runways, taxiiways and ramps clearing them for safety hazard reduction or FOD reduction in this instance.

Makes sense - could've been a combination of the two I saw in Sydney...XCLTM3 wrote:I thought I'd add my 2 cents worth here.

First time i seen this the term FOD, was always thought it was debris or damaged not displacement

My bad,
yes Pete - the "D" stands for "Debris" not "Displacement" as I incorrectly used.

I always thought it was Foreign Object Damage.
