Installing

Post by eupilot » Wed Nov 05, 2014 6:28 pm

Hello all!
I am new on this forum, since I just bought EKCH. But not installed for the time being. :-(
Usually I don't like installers. And, above all, I don't like not to be free to install a scenery in the folder of my choice, outside the FSX folder.
If all developpers behaved as FlyTampa, it would not only be impossible to install many airports in the infamous Addon Scenery FSX folder, because C: would soon be crowded with all installed airports, and the user would soon be constrained to reinstall the sim and its add-ons on another larger SSD, leaving the OS alone on the first one. Irrespective of the annoyance, it would incur a cost that would soon dry the demand to developpers with this installation policy.
My question: is there a way to circumvent the installer or to force it to accept a destination folder of the user's choice on another drive, large enough to welcome all installed airports and sceneries.
FlyTampa, don't make me regret old SCANSIM! :|
Best.

You can just create the Temp folder, copy the FSX.EXE or P3D.EXE into it (or any file renamed FSX/P3D.EXE) and then you select that temp folder as root FSX/P3D during installation. You'll end up with a folder structure often containing /effects/, /Addon Scenery/.... Some of these have to be copied to the actual FSX/P3D location, but the bulk of the data (within /Addon Scenery/) you could place on another HDD and then register it manually in the scenery library.

In case of Copenhagen and the new Config-Tool (part of the FT-Libraries), there is a special item to pay attention to. The Config Tool EXE resides in FS/FlyTampa/. It will change options of the scenery in FS/Addon Scenery/FlyTampaCopenhagen/. So the directory structure relation (or hierarchy ) between the BGL files of Copenhagen and the Config Tool EXE must be maintained. To be technical, the tool will essentially change files using ../Addon Scenery/FlyTampa-Copenhagen/scenery/, the first ../ being "cd.." one level up. If you don't mind extra work to be completely custom you could edit the folder structure in the Tool folder /flytampa/scripts/cph...xml

Hi Martin,
Glad to see that FlyTampa is up to its reputation of a great customer policy, even with old grumblers like me.
Thank you for your reactivity. I appreciate. :)
Then, whatever the complexity of the beast, your suggestion is the usual practice: the fake FS folder with the FS.exe inside.
As far as customization is concerned, do you mean I need to edit the folder structure in the Tool for it to work properly, but that it could work without that extra, at the expense for me of not being able to change options?
Since I don't want to experiment with bad or limiting effects of a wrong installation, could you tell me whether the edit work is to be done in the Tool itself, when it opens, in a box available to the user (some sort of correction there), or directly (and previously) in the .xml file you mention (changing a line of code)?
I use Addit!pro to disable or enable sceneries or airports to manage VAS. Is there any interference with the config tool to be aware of?
Once those questions answered, I am confident everything will go well. I am eager to "flycopenhagen" asap and enjoy FlyTampa developpers' fantastic job on EKCH.
Regards.

For the Tool to work on a different HDD/location you have 2 options:
1. Simplest. You keep the folder relationship intact, for example:
D:/FS-Addons/FlyTampa/ Config-Tool EXE in this folder
D:/FS-Addons/Addon Scenery/FlyTampa-Copenhagen/
D:/FS-Addons/Addon Scenery/FlyTampa-Copenhagen_LC/
The above would work

2. More work, but more custom solution.
You can place the Config-Tool in any folder, as long as you have a look and edit in Notepad the file:
FlyTampa/scripts/config_FT_CPH.xml. If you know folder structures and "cd.." it should be obvious how to edit it to work with your custom Addon folder setup.

Either Option 1 or 2 may lead to some issues when installing upcoming CPH updates tho. In that case its best that instead of installing the update, you email us your name/email requesting a full new download of the latest version.

Thx. That's perfectly clear for me. I am very grateful to you for your proposal about updating.
I hope I will soon be in a position to join the chorus of praise about your Copenhagen.
Best regards.
Bernard.
