What would cause this ???

Post by wenham » Sun Dec 19, 2010 11:29 am

While flying around this morning in a copter when looking back at the airport I see this.

After a second or 2 it goes away but if I look elsewhere and then back at the airport it comes back.

well... I seem to have figured out my issue that was causing the boxes. In playing around with some settings in Nhancer I had changed my pre-render to 1. When it is at 3 (default) no boxes appear.

The issue remains for me on the gray/black boxes. I have tried several tings from re-install, different Bufferpoool settings, locking or unlimited frames, texture max load of 30 ect, ect but still get the issue. This is only happening when quickly looking back at the airport. My system is a i7 @ 4ghz with a GTX 260. Although my VC is not the latest greatest I would think it should be able to handle this scenery just fine. Anybody have any ideas, I am only seeing this at this scenery.

When you say you see them for a second, this sounds like a texture reload. Do you see anything else in the scenery reloading textures as well at the same time?

Every now and then I will see a block of ground texture reload but not that often. This only happens if I quickly look back at the airport. If doing a normal flight I probably would not even see it as I dont usually look back as I am too busy flying the aircraft. I will try to post a few more shots showing the issue.

Jim,

I get that as well sometimes, although I have a video card with 1gb of RAM, I am only running 2gb of system memory., which is what I pegged it on in my case.

As an experiment I am going to try to lighten up the texture load and see what happens if I convert the ground textures to DXT1's from DXT5. I've done that a few times to sceneries in the past and it has helped and other times it hasn't, but since I have a back up of the original textures I might as well try a few and see what the effects are. The only problem is I cant open them with DDS Converter 2, so I will have to do them one at a time with DXTBmp and it will take a while. If it works and "lightens the load" so to speak I will report back and let you know how to do it, or maybe Martin could post a .bat file for us to batch them to a smaller size or just make a download for those of us who want to try a lighter set of textures.

Here is another shot I just made. It almost looks as if the blocks are comming from the PAPI lights. Look at the position of the blocks in relation to the PAPI lights.

@ Sean, thanks for investigating I look forward to your results. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

No problem and hope your enjoying your holidays as well.

BTW, I get what your seeing only when I am flying a/c that are really taxing on performance anyway, like the PMDG 744 which is usually the a/c I use when testing. If I am flying around the airport in something lighter, like the free Archer that Just Flight is giving away, then the texture loading is much quicker and I dont get those boxes as often when switching views.

Just watched the video made by Dexter11929 and at around 0:48 I saw the black box issue I have been seeing as well so I guess I am not the only one. Is there really nothing that can be done to fix it? Other than that I LOVE the scenery and think it is awesome to say the least.
