FPS help

Post by smasma » Fri Jul 04, 2008 9:39 pm

I seem to be getting very low fps in the Hong Kong. At your TNCM scenery I get around 18 fps. In Hong Kong with and Overland 737 I get around 13 fps. I don't know why I have such a low framerates because I believe I have a good system.

I have an iMac running boot camp. Windows XP can read 3gig ram, even though there are 4gb in my computer. I don''t think that should make a difference because it can read 3gig.

I have a 2.39ghz intel core 2 duo Processor.

My graphics card is a 256 ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 XT.

For some reason I have been getting a low fps. I have different combinations of 3D settings in the ATI Catalyst Control Center. I do not know what settings to do because it has different from the settings Martin posted.

The settings in FSX are the same as the first performance post.

Thanks in advance,

SmaSma

Is that with default install options ( performance stuff unchecked ) ?
Have you tried turning autogen down or off ?

I had a few things checked. I'll try installing the default options and turn the autogen down depending on the fps in the tomorrow morning. Thanks for the quick reply.

The largest FPS hit will come from the install-options "Static Aircraft" and "Autogen Trees". Not installing those may kick your fps up by 5 already.

Also
Water maxed with building reflections?
What AA and AF setting in the ATI panel?
Is there AI traffic at HK yet? (it would be a lot more then at TNCM obviously).

I am not sure how the Mobility Radeon HD compares to a dedicated card but these integrated solutions generally lag behind by factor 2 or more.

I tested it with a flight from VHHH to VHHX. I first had the ATI settings with 2x on everything. I got around 15 fps with an Overland 737. My fsx settings were:

Global Texture Resolution: High

LOD: Large
Mesh Complexity: 89
Mesh res. 5m
Text. Res. 30cm
water: 1.x high
Scenery Complexity: Extremely Dense
Autogen: Dense

Detailed Clouds: Low
When I used simple clouds I had a few more fps. I am using FEX.

Airline Traffic Density:60%
GA traffic: 48%
Road Vehicles 30%

Also throughout all my tests in the 2-D cockpit I got about 2 fps. When they happened I kept having to defrag my memory and I got back up to around 15fps. In the VC if I defrag the memory it works for 2 minutes and then I have to defrag again. I also tested with a CLS 747 and I had to defrag more often. I downloaded the mytraffic file to add traffic to vhhx.

BTW this is one of the best sceneries I have purchased :D.

Thanks,
SmaSma

I flew around in the New York area and I seem to be having the same problem. I am just going to reinstall FSX and the SP's and then Hong. Ill report back when I'm done.

Are you using sdk or non sdk mode ?
Sdk mode will give you an increase in fps over non sdk.

The weak link for you is the video card, when you get everything reinstalled try it in sdk and then non sdk and see what fps difference you get.

I reinstalled FSX and the two SP's. In SDK mode I got around 25fps. Non Sdk I got 15fps with AA 4x and AF 4x on the AtI control center. Is there anything I can install to make my fps better?

Thanks

If you installed it with the default Options on the Component Page (several unchecked by default) & in SDK-Compliance mode, there isn't much else that can be removed. Only thing would be to look into FSX's settings. There is some recommended settings in the PDF manual in case you haven't checked that yet.

I am going to put the settings reccomended in the manual for the best FPS. I have some questions about graphic card settings.

In the AA settings I put the level as 4x but then under it is a pull down menu for Filter with three options: Box, narrow tent, or wide tent. Which one will give me the highest fps. There is also a checkbox that says temporal AA. It says when I hover the mouse over it that it: Doubles the effective AA image quality level, by alternating the sample pattern every other frame.

There is a setting for Adaptive AA. It says: Substantially improves visual image quality by AA transparent textures.

There is a setting for disabling Catalyst A.I. There is a check box for it should I check it. If I check t it says: Disables per-application video driver optimizations.

Those are all the settings that I don't understand what to put. Sorry for asking so many questions.

Thanks,

Smasma

I did a search in the Apple support section. I updated the drivers and its good enough to fly in. Its from 15-25 fps which is good enough for me.

Most of us use Nvidia cards so that is probably why nobody answered you on the AA settings for your card.
