Re-install Question

Post by JPL19 » Tue Jul 31, 2007 7:12 pm

I am putting FS9 on a new system. My old system crashed, but I had a complete backup of all my releveant scenery and aircraft folders.

Can I just use these folders in my new install?

I am missing one installer (KSEA) and have the first release versions of all the rest. My folders were pretty well up-to-date.

Thanks for any answers.

Transfering folders like that will work for most of the older sceneries.

The newer ones, KSEA & TNCM in particular, have to install some stuff in generic FS9 folder which gets lost when just copying the installation folders.

To get a copy of the KSEA installation and serial, send me an email with your Name.

"...install some stuff in generic FS9 folder which gets lost when just copying the installation folders."

Is this specific to FlyTampa stuff?

What specifically would not get moved? I don't understand. I can see entries into the registry obviously not being there but as far as files go?

I'm talking about things like files in the effects, scenery/name, namw and other folders. It is not specific to flytampa, depends on the individual scenery.

But that's what I mean. If those folders are copied as well then it would work, right?

With the exceptions like the aircraft and gauge folders, I don't think it is a good idea to transfer the whole fs9 folder structure over.

Example: Some addon changes a default .bgl file. During installation it would rename the original to .bak and place its' own .bgl perhaps under a different name. By copying the fs9 folder over you end up with the original .bgl, the renamed .bak and the addon's own replacement resulting in the addon not working properly, worst case even crashing the Sim without anyone able to track down the problem.
