FSX Steam Edition

Post by martin[flytampa] » Sun Jan 25, 2015 7:51 pm

Our FSX Addons will install and work in FSX-Steam Edition. Please read the following notes:

Installation:

1. If you have FSX-SE installed by itself, without also having the regular boxed FSX installed on the same machine, our Installers should work without any problems once you point them to the root FSX-SE folder:

Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\FSX\

2. If you have both FSX-SE and the regular boxed version of FSX installed, in addition to following the instructions above you will also have to add the Scenery to the Library, as described here: http://www.flytampa.org/support.html#support2
Note the folder you have to add will be:

Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\FSX\FlyTampa\AirportName\

The FSX Bug where you need to click within the empty area of of the file dialog still applies.

Incompatibilities:

- Vistamare is not FSX-SE compabible, therefore the animated traffic won't work at CYUL.

Pardon my ignorance on the topic of FSX, but I am thinking about moving from FS9 to FSX and noticed in my search for FSX, the Steam Edition. What exactly is the Steam Edition?

Scott FSX: STEAM Edition is the optimized version of the boxed nightmare that has plagued most of the world of flight simmers for almost 10 years. FSX: Steam Edition can handle just about everything that the boxed version could not. With more and more of the addons for the Steam Edition growing it becomes even MORE enjoyable over time. I personally am very pleased with the Steam Edition for its ability to handle just about all that you can throw at it unlike its Legacy boxed crappy older brother.
I do have on my wishlist a 64bit version that will help put to rest all of the crappy scenery that is an eye soar with or without scenery addons. This wish will probably not happen for some time. So be prepared to spend hundreds of whatever currency you use on addons that help a tad bit. IMHO airport scenery such as FLYTampa and FlightBeam are topnotch and worth the money. Hope this helps you jump back into Flight simming and I do HIGHLY recommend FSX: Steam Edition without any doubt. Enjoy

Thanks Preston, your explanation was a big help. I'll be purchasing FSX-SE shortly, and loading it up with high end sceneries and aircraft, as soon as my new computer arrives. Thanks again.

Hi awesome team at FlyTampa!

Any news on when Vistamare will be made compatible with FSX-SE ? Are you able to put some pressure on the developer to update the dll's ? This is, as far as I know, the only addon that is still not compatible with FSX-SE. It is so frustrating at the moment as Athens, Copenhagen, Dubai etc. (not sure of complete list) require it for the animated traffic. Aerosoft are rather cagey about committing to any update or solution.

If you think that Vistamare is going nowhere, do you have any plans for patches for the airports that have been developed requiring it ? Airports are just not the same without animated traffic and jetways. Vienna is a great example of an airport that works perfectly in FSX-SE - without Vistamare (AESLite / AES). Not sure about your latest airports Toronto and Sydney - do they require Vistamare ? If they do, I will sadly have to hold off purchasing until there is a solution.

Looking forward to some good news on this front !

FSX-SE is really good compared to FSX-boxed edition. PC Pilot confirmed that the compilers are more modern, the texture loading is different and I can confirm that the VAS usage and smoothness is much better.

PS - I can't wait for Schiphol - I hope this will not use AESLite or require AES for the jetways.

Kind regards,

Rhett

We will not be using Vistamare in any future products and I don't think it will be updated at this point.
as far as our airports, Vistamare is currently required only for animated traffic at EKCH, CYUL, LGAV.

Thanks. That's good news. Please don't forget a patch for the jetways to operate using ctrl+J at Athens. And maybe also an option to rename the parking bays back to the correct names / numbers to allow for the default airport traffic.

Regards,

Rhett.

Rubbish...The Steam version is no different than the boxed version with exception that it's been optimized to suite the Steam overlay. The tweaks offered in the steam version are tweaks that had been implemented into the boxed version of FSX over the course of years of tweaking. There will be no 64 bit version of FSX offered ever. That would require a complete re-write of ESP code...ain't going to happen. I run the boxed Gold version with a slew of add-ons and it runs very well. My install is well over 200GB at this point.

You really need to get your facts straight... It is actually different, starting from the recompiling of libraries, to different twekas and tidbits that make it it run much smoother...
This is common knowledge by now, so please don't go around spreading BS...

But hey, at least you got the part about there not going to be a 64 bit version right...

It isn't I who needs to get anything straight. A recompiling of libraries is a far cry from an actual re-write of ESP code. In fact, even with the recompiling FSX still uses the 2005 libraries. The focus on the Steam version was to allow it to run optimally within the Steam overlay.

Apparently it isn't common knowledge by some still, please educate yourself before you spew BS.

But hey, at least you got in part the recompiling partly correct.

Hey martin. Been awhile. Well a sad day has come. My Hard Drive with FS9 failed on me (plus the backup of my FS9 being on the same damn drive just a day before i was going to move it). So does the directory tree matter where its installed? I do have the boxed version and that was lost on the drive too so im basically thinking this is the time to switch to FSX and just run it barebones like FS9 without all that extra AI crap (except for AI aircraft)...

Let me know. Im kinda getting sick of being left behind as a FS9er so i think 2004-2016 is long enough for FS9 for me.

If FSX wasnt coded so horrible for multi-core usage, i would get great FPS (look at my signature).

If you can afford it I would opt for Prepar3D at this point.
