I too am a huge SWA fan, would also love to work for them some day. Anyways, while I know it's not exactly the same thing, as it happens I passed my checkride just today for my Multi-Engine rating. Which means now I'm now a Commercially Licensed, Instrument and Multi-Engine rated. I can tell you, I'm not that great at math. And you don't need to be. As long as you can do basic calculations you'll be fine. Good luck. As long as your good at 'conceptual thinking', visualizing your location on a chart, etc. You'll be fine. Master that E6B too, it'll come in handy when it's time to get that instrument rating.

Good luck to you guys in your aviation careers. One of the most important factors is the determination to realize your goal. Thanks for being fans of Southwest, it truly is an awesome airline. I don’t mean to come off so hard on bullsfan013, but I obviously steadfastly support Southwest.

BTW, Southern Illinois has a great aviation school.

Thanks, SIU is indeed a fine institution of aviation, I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone looking for a career in aviation. Exceptional faculty, brand new 172R's (although you have to wait till your instrument training to get your hands on them) and a great place to get your fill of 'the college experience' it certainly was a bittersweet day today, my last flight as a Saluki!

No problem ,and i am sorry I offended you. I totally understand why you are a fan of Southwest, becuase obviously you are an pilot for them.If you dont like the company you work for, then what is the point it is no fun.I was wondering what age did you start taking flying lessons, and start to pursue your career as a pilot? I am only 13,and am planning to start taking flying lessons soon!

Hey I would'nt mind saying some things. I am 16 and I just turned it. I started my Flight lessons in Late march, and I still have alot more to do. I have'nt been going up because in Michigan for Kitzee aviation training, its like 98.50 dolors for an hour. I don't have that money becuase I am purchasing stuff like Chicago Midway, and ram. I love to fly. I was 15 when I started mine. They let me fly the first time. After Highschool I plan to attend Western University for there aeronautical science program. They train you there and everything. After I fail Calculas haha, Ill take that one class again and then be done with college. I suck at math. Ha. Thats my only fear, The amount of math involved in Aviation. Alot of people tell me though that you really dont use alot up there. Just mental math. After college i plan to get alot of hours under my belt by doing alot of private flights, go to detroit metro airport, get tons of info on working there. Start probably on a saab 340. Do very small flights. I just hope to have my Multiple engine certificate by then, and IFR certificate. I hope you and I both make it.

Thankyou for responding to my post, and answering my questions. I can clearly see that I have a long way to go in my career. I also see that flying can cost allot of money. Thanks for the heads up about it now I will make sure I put some money away for it. I also am not that good at math, but that is my main goal in highschool is to improve on it. Good Luck in your career, and hope to see you later in the air. :D

Like I said, I did not try to come off that strong. It comes more from being on some of the other Major Airline forums where there are a few SWA haters. Sometimes I get too defensive and post too fast. As far as a flying career, start as soon as you can and keep abreast of all aviation related opportunities that are out there. My 17 year old neighbor just returned from a free aviation summer camp sponsored by Western Michigan University. She applied and was accepted to the camp, and it proved to be a positive experience. She learned a great deal about aviation and was able to even go up in an airplane and fly. These are the type of things that are available that people need to get involved in.

Hey Andrew and David248,

I'm not a professional pilot, but wanted to be until I was about 16. When I was about your age, I arranged a tour of Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, out here in Prescott...I got to meet the dean and he showed me around personally. He told me something I'll never forget: no matter what career path you choose, the most crucial attitude to have is perseverance, and the most important thing to do is to always challenge yourself. Most universities would rather see a B or a C in a hard class than an A in an easy one.

Now, here's how I feel: make connections! Go to camps, go hang out at the airport and get to know people (sounds crazy, but it's helpful!) Pick people's brains about what the career is like and what you need to do to get there. You move toward what you picture in your mind...so go for it, and you'll be surprised when you overcome all the obstacles!

I'm 23 now, and studying microbiology. Those lessons from my 8th grade trip to ERAU still apply! 8)

If you're ever out Arizona's way, let me know, I'd be glad to show you around!

Take care,
Mike A.

Mike thankyou for telling me all those useful things that can help me become one step closer towards my career. I live just south of Midway and Ohare, and have been their many times. My cousin also is a pilot for Ual so I think that is an advantage for me. I was wondering what your opinion was on the best aviation college in the country. I have herd a lot of good things about embry riddle and others.
