Fly-Maarten Ground Mipmap Script

Extract the ZIP into your /Addon Scenery/FlyTampa-Maarten/texture/ folder. It contains 2 files, imagetool.exe and __mip_tncm_ground.bat. Double-click the file __mip_tncm_ground.bat.

A DOS window will pop up, wait until it closes by itself. This script changes a number of ground texture files. Whatever the before/after results are better depends on your gfx-card capabilities & settings.

- The results after running the script should look better only if you have Anisotropic Filtering (AF) enabled and at a high level (common settings are: OFF, 2x, 4x, 8x, 16x). If you have this on OFF or "Application Controlled" the results will be worse after running the script.

This is a test-script, run at your own risk. To restore the original state re-run the FlyTampa-Maarten installation program. Please report back whatever this fixes any shimmering problems.

Martin...
What did you do, add or take away mip maps? Whatever you did it worked!!!! It virtually eliminated all shimmering at TNCM. It is night and day. It didn't seem to have any affect at TFFJ though. Was this limited to the TNCM files only or did it do everything in the texture directory? What format did you convert to? I have some other sceneries that need the same thing. KSEA, KSFO, KTPA, UK2000 EGLL and Imaginesim KEWR all flicker as well so once we know what format to convert to we should be able to apply this fix across the board. You are the best. I know Andre is going to love you...
You are like an FS g-d right now
Thank you so much

BTW, thought my stats would help this is on Dual 8800 GTX at 16xaa/16xaf

Many Thanks for your expert knowlege in senery design.

The script adds mipmaps to all ground textures, also at ST. Barts and Saba.

Most if not all airport addons ship with unmipped ground textures. This is because before Anisotropic Filtering the FS-Mipmap slider would render the airports into a blurry soup (Turn off AF and set FS9's mip slider to default 4 and you get the idea).

Is the script specific to the new TNCM package or would it do the same if we ran it in KSEA KSFO etc?
Thank you SO much again. You have no idea how huge this is for some of us with high end aa/af settings.
Now to go and tell Gary and Cal at UK2000 and I/S to see if they can do the same :)
This was my ONLY lingering issue with FS and you just solved it. I owe you a case of beer!

I looked into making a general script that would work with any textures/airports... But it is risky and always messes something up. It is still possible, but would require you/user to first go into the airport's texture folder, figure out which files are the ground texture (sometimes easy to tell by filenames), then copy only these textures into a separate folder, run the script there, then paste the converted files back into the airport's texture folder and hope for the best.

Hey, that's how I do it with my AI :). As long as you back up everythihng first there is no harm in trying. The way things shimmer now it can't make it much worse :). BTW, DXT1 or DXT3?
Thanks again, it is really really appreciated that someone got to the bottom of this.

Incidentally, I live in NJ now but went to School at USF and then worked for IBM down in Tampa for years. I lived right on Bayshore across from the hospital. Great memories though.

OK, sorry for the rant thanks again,
-Paul

Hey Martin,
Thanks again for the patch btw.
I was just curious now that things have "hopefully" slowed down a little bit is there a chance to get the same patch for KSEA, KSFO, KTPA and KMIA? Those are the only other FT sceneries I own thus far and they all still flicker. ;)
Thanks in advance,
-Paul
