Question about flatten.bgl

Post by jbroadwa » Wed Apr 18, 2007 3:10 pm

I just noticed in my KMDW installation that fs9 is accessing the flatten.bgl continuously. Is this supposed to happen?

Thanks,
Joshua

You mean while monitoring file access in something like filemon?

I haven't looked at file access during KMDW but I can tell you that we (addon desginers) have no control over these things as far as I know. If FS9 needs to access something like this flatten file all the time, that would be done automatically by MSFS's engine for some unknown reason.

I am not sure if this has anything to do with it, but KMDW lies on a "line" that has a bump (see topics relating to bump). Perhaps this is some sort of joint line in FS's LOD grid where data needs to be merged in realtime. This is pure speculation btw, all I know is that there is a bump line that goes straight trough the airport and also continues outside of our addon.

Martin,

Thanks for your quick response. Yes, I saw FS9 was accessing flatten.bgl at KMDW all the time using procmon.exe. I noticed a similar issue at KSAN and KBOS. So, on a hunch, I turned off the traffic. When traffic is off, the issue goes away. Apparently, the traffic engine and the scenery engine are passing messages back and forth to let the AI planes know where the ground is. I suspect that is why flatten.bgl and the flatten at KSAN are being called all the time.

Anyway, could you confirm you see flatten.bgl being called continuously when traffic is on and is dormant when traffic is off? If it does occur on your setup, it is quite interesting as the overhead that decreases performance from traffic is not just from the airplane objects, it is also from the continuous calling of the scenery engine. Thanks for humoring me.
