Runway Colours/Approach Terrain

Post by DMacAir » Mon Dec 26, 2011 10:25 pm

Although I know this is true in real life, and FlyTampa did a far more than impressive rendition of the airport, why are their two runway colours on both of the runways at Eleftherios Venizelos? (Grey on the edges, start and finish and black in the middle)

Why did they do his, does it help in any way? There's no other airport that I could spot this interesting pattern at.

Additionally, is there anywhere to download an Athens city scenery? As is with many great scenery add-one in this day of flight-simming age, the leap from drab, yellowish-pale terrain to beautiful, volumetric-grass, green field scenery is a pretty noticeable one. In the real world, it's all part of the package.

Anyways, thanks for your help, great scenery and I can not wait for YUL at all! :D :D :) 8) :P :o

Hi DMacAir,

the runways of LGAV have two different materials on them as far as I know.
The grey surface is concrete, while the black surface you see is a kind of bituminous material that offers high friction.

I had asked a similar question in another forum and this is what I learned..... :)

About your other question about Athens city scenery:

-There is no Athens VFR scenery that I know of so far.

I'm designing some buildings myself, but I don't think they qualify to be an addon for now.

Thanks for the response. I can't wait until your add-on comes out! I'm sure it will look awesome!

I wonder why they wouldn't make the entire surface that high friction material. It would slow the aircraft right from the start, and speed them up.

Thanks,

Thank you for the early response! If this works at Athens, why is it not seen at any other major airports? Even climatewise, no other Mediterranean airports have it, to my knowledge at least.

I think they're using it at LEGR Granada too

I really wish I knew the answer to your question, because I also want to learn this, but I'm not much into airports architecture. 8)

Whatever the answer is, I love to land on those runways, both in FSX and in reality! :D

Not sure I will be making it an addon as I mentioned!
If I do, I will for sure tell you but I guess it will take me some time.

I'm hoping to add some more buildings for Athens downtown and Attica.
This is just a concept for now though!

Even if it you don't end up making the add-on it is still a very good idea.

Hello again,

Just wondering if they used the two materials technique at Zürich, as well. On one of the runways there is an obvious black streak. Thanks.

I don't think it is the same technique used there, I know which runway you're referring to.

Open Google Earth and go to Schipol EHAM airport.

They are using a very similar pattern there! :)

Especially on RWY's 27 and 24....;)
